Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Incomes and Savings. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、 上图所示为近年中国居民收入和存款增长率的变化,描述其变化并说明原因;

2、 对此做出评价。

Incomes and Savings

From the charts we can easily find that incomes in China are increasing, and savings deposits are also increasing. In 1965, the average annual income in China increased at a rate of 6%, and the savings increased 6.5%. in 2005 the numbers soared to 29.5% and 31% respectively.

The possible reasons, I think, may be as follows. First, with the development of the economy, the wealth of our whole nation’s increasing. So this promotes the increase in income and savings. Secondly, people have changed their consumption habits greatly in recent years. For example, many parents now spend a lot on their children’s education, and they have to save money for their children’s higher education. Last but not least, with the increase of income, people have more money to save, which can later be spent on insurance, house payments and other large expenses.

In my opinion, the increase of income and savings is just like a double-edged sword which can benefit the whole nation’s revenue while hindering the economy’s development. The more money is saved in the bank, the less money people spend. To put it briefly, I think China’s government should take some effective measures to encourage consumption to promote the further development of the economy.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、 根据上表,简要描述1980年与1999年我国农业、工业和服务业从业人员所占比例的情况及其变化;

2、 请说明发生这些变化的原因;

3、 得出结论。

The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions

It can be seen from the chart that the great changes have occurred in the professional pattern in China between 1980 and 1999 with a great increase in the people involved either in manufacturing or service and a corresponding shrinking in agricultural population. Especially, in 1999, 38% of the Chinese working in the agriculturak industry, decreased nearly half to that of 1980 while the number of people engaged in service industry quadrupled that of 1980. Why are there such great changes during 20 years?

In my opinion, three possible reasons contribute to it. First of all, with the development of primitive economy, more people will move over into manufacturing and the service industries. Secondly, China’s open-door and economic reform policies realize more efficient and effective farming and increased urbanization. For example, with the development of what is called the village and township enterprises, a great number of farmers are now working in various small business without living their homes, which accounts mainly for the increase in manufacturing population. Finally, the economic policies result in an immense improvement in the Chinese people’s living standard, which creates a great huge demand for service and thus enable the service industries to flourish and absorbs more and more people into these fields.

As far as the effect is concerned, the changes of the percentages of Chinese professions will have far-reaching significance. On the one hand, these changes signify the great achievements China has made since she launched the economic reform and opened her door to the world. On the other hand, they also mark a great leap foward on her way towards an economic power in the world. In a word, both the nation’s development and her people’s living standard will get more and more benefit from these changes.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、 上图是1999~2001年我国中等专业学校发展图表,描述其变化;

2、 简略说明产生这些变化的原因。

The Decline in Technical Secondary Schools

According to the above statistics, the number of students attending technical secondary schools is decreasing. As a result, more and more technical secondary schools have closed down, which has raised great public concern.

There are several reasons that contribute to the decline of enrollment in these schools. First, with the reform of the national educational system, colleges and high schools are enrolling an increasing number of students, resulting in intensified competition for technical secondary schools. Secondly, the requirement for technicians are becoming more and more demanding, while many of these schools have failed to meet the increased requirements and lost their attraction to young people. Thirdly, most people don’t respect these schools and play down their importance.

However, this decline will come to an end in the near future and technical secondary education will thrive once again because our society is in great need of workers with considerable technical skills for economic development. At the same time, through years of struggle for existence, these schools have learned to adapt themselves to the changing situation, orient their curriculums towards the demands of the market and provide necessary instruction for their graduates. In addition, the government considers technical secondary education to be important, and these schools will enjoy stronger support from the government.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Changes in Chinese People’s Diet. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

Changes in Chinese People’s Diet

1、 根据上表,描述人们饮食结构的变化;

2、 请说明发生这些变化的原因;

3、 得出结论。

Changes in Chinese People’s Diet

From 1999 to 2003, great changes had taken place in Chinese people’s diet. As is revealed in the table, during the five years, the consumption of grain decreased by 9%, while that of meat and milk increased by 6% and 4% respectively. From the figures we can draw the conclusion that grain, as the staple food in China, is playing a less important role in people’s diet, while the consumption of high-energy food, such as meat and milk, has increased steadily.

What has caused these changes? From my point of view, there are two main reasons. On the one hand, people now have more money to buy high-energy food. On the other hand, people now pay more attention to the quality of their diet. They are seeking for the most reasonable diet structure that will do good to their health.

As a result, we can see that people’s living standard has greatly improved in the five years. We can also expect better living standard and more reasonable diet structure in the future.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled More Candidates for Civil Servant. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1、 现在有越来越多的大学应届毕业生报考公务员,带来了一定的不利因素;

2、 列举两到三个不利因素加以论述;

3、 你对此有何看法。

More Candidates for Civil Servant

Nowadays many college graduates apply for civil servant positions. It is true that the positions are ideal in terms of incomes, employment security and respect of others. However, the ever increasing number of applicants doesn’t necessarily mean a good thing. The fever for civil servant has brought some side effects. The side effects are listed as follows:

Firstly, many students apply for the positions for wrong reasons. Some of them apply just because their friends do it or because their parents want them. Some, instead of aiming at serve the people, have the intention of enjoying the interests and power brought by their future position. Secondly, too many candidates compete for limited positions. Take such hot positions as those in the judicial branch of government for example, it is estimated that one matriculate is selected out of 200 candidates. More worse, with the flow of most talents to such positions, those positions that are important for social welfare but inferior in personal welfare are left uninterested. This should arouse our deep concern.

For my part, college students should be cautious when deciding whether to apply for the positions. On the one hand, they should not follow others blindly. On the other hand, there are plenty of ways of employment and self-employment, so why crowd on one bus? In a word, the fever should be cooled down.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Fast Food. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1、 快餐在中国十分流行,它是现代快节奏社会的最佳反应,并分析快餐受的原因;

2、 然而,从营养角度来讲,快餐却差强人意;

3、 对快餐还是以偶尔品尝为宜。

Fast Food

In present-day China, fast food is so popular, especially among children and teenagers, that it can be seen in every big and medium-sized city. It’s even difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society in the way that fast food does. Some people think it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal―saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. In their opinions, its popularity is also attributed to the restaurants’ clean and cozy environment, excellent service, and guaranteed quality of food and drinks.

However, others maintain that fast food is usually low in nutrition and can’t be regarded as a balanced diet. For example, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. Besides, although cooking at home is time-consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and delicious meals your body needs and likes.

As far as I’m concerned, fast food is not my best choice. For one thing, I prefer traditional spicy Chinese food. For another, being engaged in the work all day, I may spend one or two hours to prepare my favorite dishes to ensure myself a nice rest. As a result, fast food is only a good choice when I am in a hurry and resort to it once in a while.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Never Give Up. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1、 人们常说“不要放弃”,这句话的意义何在?

2、 具体论述你对这句话的理解。

Never Give Up

“Never give up” is often said by people when they are frustrated or in depression. This phrase means determination and encouragement. In my opinion, the determination to succeed is of great importance. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.

If we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged by our failures; instead we should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow as we should.

Another reason that we should never give up is because we can learn from our mistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is of no use.

Finally, as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of life. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.

In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us do better in our future work. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals; but if we keep trying, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Should We Worship Celebrities? You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1、 我们是否应当崇拜名人?明确阐述你的观点;

2、 从正反两方面具体论述你的观点。

Should We Worship Celebrities?

Celebrities have excelled in their respective fields and made a place for themselves in the society. Actors, athletes, rock stars and even politicians whom we look up to are all celebrities. However, achievement in careers does not necessarily make celebrities idols to be worshipped blindly, as they think and make mistakes too as we common people do.

Having a role model is of no harm, but we should not imitate everything we hear about the celebrities without any judgment. Learn from the celebrities with our minds open; do not let their persona overshadow our judgment. We should remember that however extraordinary these people are, they are also ordinary huamn beings and liable to make mistakes or even very bad decisions at some point of their life. For example, a number of athletes and rock stars have been associated with drugs. It is for us to decide what we should imbibe from them and what not.

Meanwhile, though the celebrities are at the zenith of their professions, it is not always necessary that they are as good in their personal life. We should let their actions speak for them. What they do in real life is more important than what they preach. An ordinary man on the street, though unknown to the public, may be a better person than they are.

In conclusion, we should keep ourselves open to others’ opinions, but at the same time decide by ourselves what is right.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled The Function of an MP3 Player. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

1、 介绍MP3播放器的用途并举例;

2、 指出MP3播放器的不利影响。

The Function of an MP3 Player

An MP3 player, which is one of the most popular electronic devices, is widely used nowadays due to its multifunction.

Basically, an MP3 player can download or transfer a significant amount of music of your favorites. The attached devices are easy to use, making it simple to transfer music files to and from your computer and the player.

With built-in voice recorder, most MP3 players can record sounds and voices. A reporter can use it to record interviews instead of the old, inconvenient way of writing them in a notebook. With its functions of recording and repeating, students can use it to learn foreign languages, improving their listening ability, recording their own voice to improve pronunciation.

An MP3 player can also be used as a removable USB disk. Its data storage function allows you to safely store important documents.

Except for its wide use, the MP3 player has its negative effect. Your hearing can be seriously harmed if you listen to an MP3 with the volume too high. Sometimes you may violate other person’s privacy if the recording function of your MP3 player is improperly used. So use it in the right way, and it will does you good.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Knowledge and Diploma (Fake Diploma). You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

(1) 目前,在社会上有这样的一种说法,文凭越高越吃香;

(2) 而有些人则认为文凭不等于知识;

(3) 你的观点。

Knowledge and Diploma (Fake Diploma)

With the development of the society, more and more people enroll in the postgraduate examination for getting a high diploma. It is believed that high diploma equals to high ability and profound knowledge. Most companies are inclined to hire the people with high diploma. It seems that having high diploma means a better future.

However, is it really true that high diploma equals to high ability or profound knowledge? Some people do not agree on this kind of idea. They claim that ability or knowledge means more than diploma. Take Bill Gates, the head of the Microsoft, for example, he does not have a MBA degree which is believed to play a vital role in the success in commercial life. Furthermore, Sam Walton of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. does not a MBA degree, but they are the most successful man in commercial.

In my opinion, diploma does not equal to knowledge. A diploma is a piece of paper which establishes your education degree. But your true ability and the real knowledge come from your hard work and endowment. If you got a diploma by dishonest behavior, no matter how high a diploma it is, it was just a piece of paper, and you were as blank as that paper.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Online Education. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

1. 目前网络教育形成热潮。

2. 我认为这股热潮的原因是.....

3. 我对网络教育的评价。

Online Education

Recently an online activity has become very “in”. That is online education. 68 online education colleges have been established in the past decade in our country.

Why could online education be so popular in such a short time? Among other reasons, the quick development of internet should be an essential one, which makes all our dreams of attending class in a distance possible. Another underlying reason is the quick development of both society and technology. Today, modern science and technology is developing with lightning speed. To catch up with this development we all feel an urgent and strong desire to study. While on the other hand, due to the great pace of modern society, most people are too busy to study full time at school. Online education just comes to their aids.

Personally, I appreciate this new form of education. It’s indeed a helpful complement to the traditional educational means. It can provide different learners with more flexible and versatile ways to learn. Most of all, with online education, we can stick to our jobs and at the same time study and absorb the latest knowledge.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Young Generation Lacking of Striving Spirit. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

1. 社会上不少人认为,现在的青年学生拼搏精神不够

2. 对此你的看法是….

Young Generation Lacking of Striving Spirit

It is now said that the young generation is lacking of striving spirit. As I see it, this phenomenon is truly footed in fact. They are easy to give up and always turn a pessimistic attitude to failure. But why does it happen?

First of all, I have a sense that it is the living condition that matters. Born in the 1980s, most of us are the only child in the family living in the green house, we receive endless care like flowers. It is the love from our parents that set us away from the real world. As this goes on, when we step into the society one day, we cannot get accustomed to the fierce and competitive social life.

What‘s more, with a negative attitude, many young people are easy to be tired with everything. When coming across with a sticky problem, they are willing to stay behind rather than have a crack. Perhaps the so-called sloth has claimed them for its own.

The last but not the least, nowadays, the competition in the society is fiercer than we could imagine. In order to survive, the young people have to struggle under burden of study and work. Be adapted to the press and failure, the young people lose their self-confidence and self-esteem little by little, not to mention about the striving spirit.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: On Sportsmanship. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

1,有些人为了赢下比赛不择手段

2,你对运动精神的看法

On Sportsmanship

It seems in our sports today, the concept of good sportsmanship has been lost. While winning at all costs may be promoted in professional sports, this does not mean it is the proper way for athletes to behave.

Whether we like it or not, sportsmanship in sports is a direct reflection of our own ethics in real life. Sportsmanship like ethics concerns both the character and the actions of an athlete. The image you project as an athlete is a product of your character. Good sportsmanship is not just what you do on the field, it is hopefully the way you conduct your life both on and off the field. Unsportsmanlike behaviour―acts that are unfair, dishonest, disrespectful or against the rules―are unsportsmanlike because they are unethical. If you are unethical in sports, can you be ethical in the other areas of your life―your business dealings, your treatment of others, your family?

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic of Should We still Cherish Chinese Traditional Virtues. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below:

1. 当今的年轻人越来越强调个性发展;

2. 发展个性是否意味着忽视中国的传统美德;

3. 你的观点。

Should We still Cherish Chinese Traditional Virtues

Today’s youth do things in their own ways, spend money on whatever they want and talk to people in their own languages――personality development is ○1overstated by young people these days. To some of them, personality means to be totally different from who their parents used to be.

But the problem is that during their pursuit of their personal goals they ignore some of the traditional virtues of which their ○1forefathers were proud. Take the question of ○2fidelity to elders for example. With better education and different experiences, some young people find it’s hard to agree with their parents any longer. They have a feeling of superiority and even sometimes ○3turn their back on their elder parents.

To me, personality development and traditional virtues ○1have nothing to do with right or wrong. In our society, we need them both. These virtues help you to become a better Chinese, while personality development will improve your own character.
